Steve Canyon Statue – Idaho Springs, Colorado

Steve Canyon.jpgSteve Canyon Statue – Idaho Springs, Colorado

There are statues made in honor of past presidents, war heroes and historical figures but not a lot of them made about a comic strip character.  Here in Idaho Springs is the statue of Steve Canyon, the World War Two era comic strip character.

The community became the home to the statue in July of 1950.  The larger-than-life statue of Steve Canyon was created from Indiana limestone.

The purpose of the statue is to honor all of the various cartoon characters that went to war for the US in WWII.

The community actually convinced the federal government to pay Indiana Limestone Co. the $12,000 for the statue.

The plaque reads, in part, "The United States Treasury salutes Steve Canyon and through him, all American cartoon characters to serve the Nation."
