Andrews Arboretum – Boulder, Co
Established in 1948 the Andrews Arboretum offers the citizens of Boulder and those coming to visit the city a beautiful place to enjoy the outdoors with greenery and flowers in the heart of the city. The gardens were started by Maude Reed, a former botany teacher at Boulder High School and then purchased by the city in 1989.
The area is filed with native evergreens, cultivated shrubs, ground covers, exotic trees and more. There are quiet seating areas that are perfect for relaxing or having a relaxing lunch. Along with the perennials, annuals and shrubs and trees is a water feature for the added pleasure of the sounds of water to sooth a stressful day.
The most important function of the arboretum is for scientific and educational research of the plants and trees. In the future there will be even more interpretive identification labels on the currently existing trees and plants. There will also be more plants added to the area for your pleasure.
You can take a self-guided tour to increase your knowledge of plants for this semi-arid region of the state. Enjoy the birds that make this area home and also the other urban wildlife that you may get a chance to see.
Even the history of the arboretum is interesting. In the early 1900′s and electric railroad line, called the Denver Interuban Railroad, traveled through what is today the Arboretum. The line made a loop from Boulder to Denver with stops in many of the towns along the way.
Walking to get to the Arboretum you wil want to go to the east side of Broadway just south of Arapahoe Ave., between Grandview Ave. and marine St. It is well marked with signs at all the entrances to help you along. Paved areas and some dirt paths are accessible by wheelchair or stroller.
You can even ride your bike to the park. The bike path on the east side of Broadway will bring you right to the park. If you are on the Boulder Creek Bike Path you will need to take the pedestrain bridge near 13th St. past Boulder High School’s sports fields.
If you come by car there is parking on 13th St. Just walk across Arapahoe Ave. and follow the same directions as the walking instrucitons.
