Cheyenne Mountain Zoo - Colorado Springs, CO.jpgCheyenne Mountain Zoo - Colorado Springs, CO

Welcome to America’s only mountain zoo. The mission of the zoo is to be a leader in conservation, captive breeding and animal care.  With this as their mission you can be assured that the animals are well treated and will be a great experience for you to visit.

At the zoo you will have an opportunity to actually become an active participant.  You will be submerged into culture and habitat, inspiring new respect for the preservation of wildlife through hands on education and exposure.  The zoo was founded in 1926 to house the collection of exotic animals of Spencer Penrose.  It was incorporated to the City of Colorado Springs in 1938 and has been growing and sharing its beauty with people ever since.

A unique opportunity that goes along with the zoo admission is the opportunity to go the 1.4 miles up the Russell Tutt Scenic Highway and see the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun.  His memorial was built to honor Will Rogers who died in a plane crash in 1935.  The shrine sits at an elevation of 8,136 feet on the top deck and provides a breathtaking view of Colorado Springs and the Pike Peaks region.  It is open daily from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the summer and 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the winter.

Maybe closed due to weather without prior notice.  Closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Flash back to when you were a kid and take a ride on the zoos Historic Carousel.  This carousel was at the 1932 World’s Fair and has been here for your enjoyment since 1937. It runs daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting.
After Labor Day, the carousel runs on weekends, weather permitting.

Cost
$2 per person
Frequent flyer tickets: 10 rides for $15.

Another treat for you at the zoo is the Mountaineer Train.  This delightful antique will meet you at the front gate and take you on a ride on the only remaining stretch of track at the zoo. The train had been sold to different people and was finally brought back to the zoo and restored with the great assistance of the area Rotary clubs.

The zoo has gone through many phases of upgrades and is continuing to make things better for both the animals and the visitors.  Visit the Asian Highland, Lions Lair, My Big Backyard, African Rift Valley and the Rocky Mountain Wild exhibits and see the wonderful things there.  The elephant area is in the process of being updated and will be completed in 2012 but you can still visit the elephants in their old location until then.

The zoo is on 146 acres of picturesque CO land and is home to nearly 800 animals of many varieties.  There are 172 species of wild animals, engaging exhibits and irresistible attractions just waiting to entertain you at the zoo.
