The City of Aspen is not only considered one of the best skiing locations in the United States but also throughout the world. The city of Aspen is a Home Rule Municipality Located in Pitkin County, Colorado. Aspen was originally founded as a mining camp and named because of the amount of aspen trees in the area. Recently, the city has become an internationally renowned ski resort, known for its upscale tourist attractions. Aspen is located in the Rocky Mountains region of Colorado and is a necessary stop if you’re already planning on visiting the Rockies!
Aspen’s most popular recreation is of course winter sports. Touring this resort city you can find all sorts of sporting activities, including skiing, sleigh rides, sledding, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. The four major areas for skiing are Aspen Mountain, Snowmass, Highlands and Buttermilk. That sounds all well and good but what if you can only visit Colorado in the summer? Since much of the snow melts in the summertime, you may have to entertain yourself with other activities. Thankfully, there is still much to see in Colorado including mountain biking, hiking, white water rafting, fly fishing, paintball and paragliding. Scenery lovers can take a sky view of Aspen by way of a chair lift. There are also paintball sports, mine exploring and hot air balloon rides. You may miss skiing in the back of your mind, but you will be thoroughly entertained even in the summer.
If golfing is your favorite sport then head over to the Snowmass Golf Course, ten minutes from Aspen and with an 18-hole, par-72 course that measures 6,986 yards. The course has been designed by an award-winning golf architect and also has other amenities including restaurants and bars. One of Aspen’s most charming features is its concerts and other social events. Some of Aspen’s music events include Belly Up, a small gathering for local artists and Jazz Aspen Snowmass.
Historically speaking, Aspen is well known for being a haven to free thinking celebrities such as John Denver and Hunter S. Thompson. Additional features include Maroon Bells, an ideal location for photographing mountains and lakes, and the John Denver Park, who was moved to pen more than one song about this beautiful resort city. Ask anyone who’s been to Aspen and they will tell you it’s an amazing sight, from the changing seasonal colors to the first rate entertainment.
