The carousel has a long history. It was one of the 4000 wooden carousels carved in America between 1885 and the 1930s. The carousel is one of only 150 of these original rides still in existence. The Kit Carson Carousel is the sixth of 74 carousels created by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company.

Forty-six animals from a variety of species make up the three rows on the carousel. All of the animals are beautifully hand carved and intricately detailed. Riders will be able to choose from horses, a giraffe, zebra, dogs, and more. Riders will certainly be able to find favorite animals on which to ride.

The carousels organ was restored in 1976 during the bicentennial. Today, visitors to the carousel can hear the organ crank out several fun tunes. This organ is one of the best and most complete of its kind.

The animals on the merry go round don’t rise up and down as they do on many carousels of its day. Instead, the manufacturer opted for speed. This particular carousel spins at 12 mph, whereas the other carousels only spin at 8 mph.

While visiting the carousel, you will also want to stop by the museum, which is located in one of the old fair buildings. The museum is a fun, hands on place that has a number of great exhibits. You can see a 1902 induction motor, you can learn about how the organ works, and how the different animals are made. Everyone will have great times learning all about the carousel.

Rides on the carousel are a mere 25 cents for people of all ages. The attraction is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day daily from 11AM to 6PM. Admission to the museum is one dollar for those over ten years old. Those nine and under are free.
